Although carefully chosen medications can quickly achieve much needed relief of anxiety, depression, insomnia and trauma symptoms, a thorough and comprehensive psychiatric diagnostic evaluation can also identify many opportunities for improvement without the need for medications. The most effective treatment plan may include maximizing work-life balance, nutrition and sleep strategies, learning to address, avoid or adapt to triggers, in addition to multiple psychotherapies, including CBT, DBT & EMDR.
When medications are warranted, I recommend those with the lowest side effects, easiest to use, most predictably effective & not addictive. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to make the final decisions on which strategies they will use.
I have extensive experience working with patients with psychiatric & behavioral issues in outpatient & inpatient settings, including child, adolescent, adult & geriactric acute care, reactive attachment, long-term adolescent residential care, chemical dependency & inpatient rehabilitation treatment centers. I encourage patients to fully utilize non-medication strategies to achieve the best therapeutic benefits with the safest medication possible.
